Literacy Narrative
The First Major Assignment
I feel that I accomplished the purpose of this assignment. I wrote about my origins as a writer and connected it to what I learned about literacies. Learning about literacies taught me about the significant impact that prior knowledge and experience have on communication. When writing this narrative, I practiced free-writing. As recommended by Lamott in an article called titled "Sh*tty First Drafts," I sidelined the rigid idea that first drafts are supposed to be perfect. I embraced my writing imperfections to get my initial ideas down. This new strategy worked well for me because I let go of my strict focus on structure and grammar to concentrate on brainstorming and creating. It was comforting to know that I could always tweak things later. I realized that it is ridiculous to revise something before its fully developed. I would like to continue this technique in the future because it helped me complete this assignment. The process was very effective. I edited my first draft to improve my word choices, paragraph structures, and grammar. If I could enhance my revision process even further, I would give myself more time. Ideally, additional time would allow me to gather more perspectives for creating a better paper. The reading "Rigid Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the Stifling of Language: A Cognitivist Analysis of Writer's Block" by Mike Rose was helpful reading for me in completing this assignment. I learned that a strict writing process can be detrimental to the creative process. Without a creative process, a passionate theme is potentially difficult to compose.
